Design innovation is elusive. It is the goal of all ambitious designers and yet there is no set formula for achieving it. Perhaps that statement is itself part of the solution. One can not assume that there is one specific way of finding innovation when a whole and complete design is in question. A whole design satisfies all the needs of the user and the manufacturer of the product. It includes the appearance, the function, the cost, and the extent to which it is capable of fulfilling its intended purpose.
It is safe to say that the first step is either to start with either the function or the appearance of the product. As an industrial designer, I start with a combination of the two. Sometimes appearance is dominant in that initial step whereby I ignore what the product actually is and work from an abstract beginning. Other times the function is dominant and a certain concept of what I would like the product to be, the problem I want it to solve, or how I would like it to work, becomes the first step. The results are always greatly influenced by that choice. But success is never achieved until there is complete balance.
The work on this site is primarily student projects done between 1994 and 1998. The professional work that I have done within the past few years is proprietary. Therefore, I regret that I can not show any of it. As such, this site is only meant to show my approach and technical skills in conceptualizing, drawing, model making, and communicating my ideas. Some of the work began from abstract origins while others started from a more technical marketing-based approach. I am equally comfortable working in either way. Since I am a formalist, these projects are best seen in person to fully appreciate their surface movement and the relationship of all parts of the whole. Pictures only give a hint of what is really there.
